Julian began his musical life as a songwriter, guitarist and singer with various Cheltenham-based rock bands before turning to a more formal study of music in his 20s. He subsequently undertook postgraduate studies at Bristol University gaining a PhD in Musical Composition.
His compositional style reflects his broad musical interests, which extend from the contemporary avant-garde back to renaissance polyphony. World music, minimalism and the rock music of his early years occasionally exert their influence.
Future projects include the continuation of a collaboration with artist Fiona Robinson, a new piece for Madeleine Mitchell, music for a Hauser & Wirth project with a Turner Prize winning artist and a project with Kokoro Ensemble.
Julian is the founder and director of New Music in the South West and lives in a village 10 miles south of Bristol with his wife Kathryn and their three boys.
